Why Jailbreak? Here's how, and why.

So here's the tutorial I've been talking about for a while.  So you either have jailbroken your phone, or you'd like to jailbroke your phone, or maybe you want to understand what you can do once you jailbreak your phone.

So in my opinion there are 3 reasons to jailbreak your phone:

  • Customize it to make it look like your own
  • Get free apps from the app store
  • Enhance the functionality of the iPhone

Step 1
Update your phone to 3.1.2 via iTunes.

You've got to jailbreak the phone, this is the easy part:
Download blackra1n for your operating system, and 'make it ra1n' (not my words...)
Windows
Mac
Here's the source page: http://blackra1n.com/

Once you've installed the app on your system, run the blackra1n program and then plug in your phone.  Go here for a more detailed guide:

Step 2
Open up blackra1n on your phone (you can unplug from your computer if you'd like at this point.)

Mark Rock for installation (or cydia if you prefer)
If you've got ATT, skip this step.  Tmobile?
Mark Sn0w for installation (this allows you to run your phone on any GSM network - NOT verizon or sprint)

That's it!  You are now jailbroken and at this point, nothing is different on your phone.  You've just got Rock installed, and everything else looks and operates just like before.  That's no fun, lets make it do something new.

Open up Rock on your phone.
Go to manage on the bottom right
Click on Manage Sources (the 2nd item from top)
Click Edit
Click Add

When Enter APT URL comes up type this in:
www.sinfulIphonerepo.com
Hit Add source

Verify that it got added by scrolling down the list of sources, and then view the section titeld User Entered. It should have the sinfulrepo there.

Step 2:
First thing is first.  Lets get some security installed first.

  • Search for mobileter
    • Install the app called MobileTerminal
  • search for pam
    • Install the PAM (apple) and PAM modules.

Exit rock.

open Mobile Terminal and type:

  • su [Enter]
  • alpine (this is the default password)
  • passwd [Enter]
  • type your new password now
  • repeat your new password

Done - you are now protected (a little bit more)

Functional improvements:
Under Rock search for these:

  • Cydelete - Deletes Rock installed apps by adding the red X when deleting from the springboard.
  • SBSettings - Allows one to quickly toggle on/off settings such as 3g, tethering, wifi, ssh, etc..
  • SBSettings Tethering Toggle
  • Under the category sinfuliphone Repo:
  • com.sinfuliphone.mywi
  • Enable Tethering for 3GS

Customizing the look of your phone:

  • Winterboard
  • Five Icon Dock
  • WeatherIcon
  • Theme:
    • iLlumine (dialpad, SMS Glow, Weathericon, and full theme)

How to enable free apps:

  • Under the category sinfuliphone Repo:
    • AppSync for OS 3.1.2
    • Install0us
    • The Crack Storee

Step 4:
Start downloading .IPA files from the internet of your favorite apps and then drag them onto iTunes.

Places to go:
http://appulo.us/appdb/
http://apptrackr.org (should be out soon)
google:
when you enter in your search add this to the end of your search:
name.of.app filetype=IPA -torrent

Step 5:
Sync your phone and check the apps you want to add. Voila! You've got free apps.

Took a speculative play in aapl a couple days ago - july 180 call. Looked pretty good w/ the app store and iphone 3g coming out. It popped and flopped, but i didn't get in on the carnage. I'm sitting on my call still watching the stock bounce around the upper resistance point. we'll watch for the reversal periods - 10 AM brought a wiked rally, we'll see what happens at 11.

If the VIX can close above our magic trendline - keep your shorts on. Otherwise it looks like we might be headed higher!

Coal Fallout

Valuable commentary on the coal fallout today.

Can ACI close above the support?

The real painful one to watch has been ANR:

Tremendous fun when it ripped like a demon to 108. Tremendous pain when it plummeted to 89.

Taking your advice I went into quick profit taking - on the CHK pop, i exited this morning and watched as other people's profits ( OPP ya u kno me!) melted away:

modified positions 7 - 2

Pretty exciting morning:

had to adjsut ANR into a call spread b/c it was dropping ( IS dropping ) like a rock. guaranteed to not loose more than 50 bucks, but man from +1000 on this trade to only + 185 is tough. Talk about getting burned by being greedy :(

I also adjusted VMW with another spread - the "iron jeremy" upped my profit potential, and lowered my risk. i also made it a window for the profits though, but alas this is the nature of the iron jeremy.

Sold COL on 2.50 gain today. it broke it's trendline and wasn't moving in the direction it was supposed to yesterday, so it's behavior will be / is erratic. taking profits as they come right?

Sold CHK on the rip up, I might get back in but i wanted to avoid another ANR - watch as it tanks affair :(

Positions 7 - 2 morning

Bullish:
CHK - target: 76. stopout: 62.50
ANR - target: 125. Stopout: 87. Buy the dips!
ZEUS - target 88. stopout 68.

Bearish:
COL - target 45. stop after break of trendline (happened 7-2)
SINA - target 40. stop above 45.50
VMW - target 54. sitting @ target now - burn theta burn.
WFR - target 55. stopout @ 67
